Servicing & repairs

Heat pump servicing in Hastings that keeps your unit working

Had us fit your heat pump? We'll keep it clean, running and heating hard through the frosts. If you're after a new install instead, we can sort that too.

Book a service or ask about a new install

For our own install customers, or anyone wanting a fresh quote.

No obligation. We'll get back to you as soon as we can, usually before the end of the same day.

A yearly service keeps a Hastings heat pump running clean and heating properly. We wash filters, check the gas, clear the coils and test the outdoor unit against our salt and dust. We service the heat pumps we installed. If we didn't fit yours, we'll happily quote a new one.

Why Hawke's Bay is tough on heat pumps

Our summers are long, dry and dusty, and that dust packs into filters faster than most people expect. A choked filter makes the unit work harder for less heat, and then winter arrives and the frosts push it right to its limit. A tired, dirty unit is exactly the one that gives up on the coldest morning of the year.

That's why a regular service pays off here more than in a milder spot. Older central Hastings villas and single-glazed homes out in Flaxmere lean hard on the heat pump to stay warm, so if it's running at half output you feel it in the room and in the power bill. Keeping it clean is the cheapest way to keep the heat and the running cost sensible.

Cleaning your filters between visits

You don't need us for the basics. Popping the front cover and rinsing the filters every few weeks over summer makes a real difference, especially with all the dust we get. Let them dry, click them back in, and you've already helped the unit breathe.

A full filter clean and check goes further than that though. On a service visit we get into the parts you can't reach and confirm the unit is actually doing what it should.

  • Wash and refit the indoor filters, and clear the coil and blower
  • Check refrigerant charge and look for any leaks
  • Test heating and cooling output so you know it's pulling its weight
  • Clear the drain and outdoor unit of leaves, dust and grime

Looking after outdoor units near the coast

If you're at Clive, Haumoana or over towards Ahuriri, salt in the air is quietly eating at your outdoor unit. Salt speeds up corrosion on the fins and casing, so coastal units wear faster than the same model sitting inland at Camberley or Raureka. A rinse and an inspection each year catches that early before it becomes a repair.

It's also worth thinking about salt when you're choosing a unit in the first place. Some models handle coastal air far better than others, which is one reason we lean on brands like Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps for homes near the water. If you're comparing options, the different types of heat pump suit different homes and spots around the bay.

When a repair isn't worth it anymore

Not every problem is worth fixing. If a unit is well past ten years, corroded through and losing gas, we'll tell you straight that your money is better spent on a new one rather than throwing good money at heat pump repairs in Hawke's Bay. We'd rather be honest than sell you a patch that fails next winter.

When a replacement does make sense, a right-sized, tidy heat pump installation matters far more than grabbing the biggest or cheapest box. We'll size it to the actual room, and you can see roughly what that runs at on our heat pump installation cost page. For a whole villa, a properly planned ducted heat pump system can heat the lot from one quiet unit.

Heat pump servicing questions we get asked

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

For most Hastings homes, once a year is about right, ideally heading into autumn so it's sorted before the frosts. If you're near the coast at Clive or Ahuriri, or the unit runs hard year round, a yearly check is worth sticking to. Rinsing the filters yourself every few weeks over our dusty summers helps between visits.

What does a heat pump service include?

We wash and refit the filters, clear the indoor coil and blower, and clean out the drain. We check the refrigerant charge and hunt for leaks, then test the heating and cooling output so you know it's actually performing. Outside, we clear the unit of dust and leaves and look over the coil and casing for salt corrosion.

Why is my heat pump not heating properly?

Usually it's a clogged filter or a blocked outdoor unit choking the airflow, which is common here with all the summer dust. It can also be low refrigerant from a slow leak, a unit that's undersized for the room, or ice building up on the outdoor coil in a hard frost. Give it a filter clean first, and if it's still weak, we'll take a proper look.

Do you service heat pumps you did not install?

We only service and repair the heat pumps we installed ourselves. It means we know exactly how each unit was set up and can stand behind it, rather than inheriting someone else's work. If we didn't fit yours, we can't book you a service, but we're happy to quote a new install and look after it from there.
